An Aldeburgh building designed to preserve composer Benjamin Britten’s comprehensive archive has been named as one of the winners of an annual award which recognises architectural excellence.
The Britten Pears Archive and Colchester-based Hargood Close Emergency Housing were two of three winners for the East of England in the 2014 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) National Award. The buildings are among 56 winners in the UK and Europe, all of which were officially announced today.
RIBA east regional director, Louise Todd, said: “Having visited all the shortlisted schemes with the jury back in March, I’m delighted to see that our three national award winners are all designed for the benefit of their respective communities.”
RIBA president, Stephen Hodder, added: “It is evident that each building on this year’s list has been a labour of love but worth every penny and effort.”
The architects behind the Britten Pears Archive was Stanton Williams and Hargood Close Emergency Housing was Proctor and Matthews.
The other winner in the East of England was St George’s Chapel in Great Yarmouth.
