Eleven new training posts are being created as the company behind beer brands including Greene King IPA, Old Speckled Hen and Abbot Ale looks to recruit new talent to boost its Westgate Brewery workforce.

Six of the new vacancies will be in warehouse and distribution roles, while the other five will have an engineering focus. Once all positions are filled it will take to 18 the number of people receiving dedicated apprenticeship training at the brewer’s Bury St Edmunds HQ, including seven already working towards national qualifications in customer service.

Euan Venters, managing dDirector for Greene King Brewing and Brands, says the company recognises the need to invest in skills training and career development.

He said “We have been brewing beer in Bury St Edmunds for more than 200 years, but we wouldn’t have been able to do that as successfully as we have without investing in our workforce.

“Not only do apprenticeships provide a real springboard for people’s careers, they help us recruit, retain and develop talent – something we believe can only be good thing when securing our brewing heritage in the town for many more years to come.”

Greene King’s Discovery Apprenticeship programme was officially launched by celebrity chef Marco Pierre White last year.

Around 700 apprentices are already working and training across the company’s 2,400 pubs and restaurants in the UK, with 1,300 further employees due to benefit from the scheme this year, making Greene King one of the largest providers of hospitality-based apprenticeships.

Susie Hurrell was one of the first head office employees to sign up for apprenticeship training. She said “This will not only provide me with recognised qualifications which are specific to my current job in customer service, it will also help me to learn new skills and to progress my career at Greene King.

“It does make you feel valued as an employee when your company invests in you and helps you to carry on learning and training while you are at work.”

Greene King is working with training provider Charnwood Training Group. For more information about Greene King’s Discovery Apprenticeship programme visit: www.greenekingcareers.co.uk
