A potato farmer and a pig producer who successfully diversified into food processing have joined forces to launch a new flavoured snack.
Potato farmer Robert Strathern, who makes crisps on his farm at Wormingford, near Colchester, and pig farmer Ian Whitehead, who makes salami, have come up with a chorizo-flavoured crisp.
Fairfields Farm Crisps, which was launched in 2006, aims to use flavours from local producers to ensure that its snacks have local provenance.
Robert has already linked up with Aspall’s Cyder Vinegar at Debenham, Wicks Manor Bacon at Tolleshunt Major, near Maldon, and Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses at Creeting St Mary, near Needham Market, to make other unique East Anglian flavours.
The latest, in conjunction with the Suffolk Salami Company, is chorizo and sunblushed tomato.
The Suffolk Salami Company, home-rears its own pigs at Brundish, near Framlingham, and turns the meat into chorizo and salami.
“So many of our crisps use locally-sourced flavours,” said Robert.
“This is the first time we’ve teamed up with a salami producer.
“It’s brilliant to work with another like-minded producer. We’re all about traceability and quality and Suffolk Salami Company shares those same values.
“The quality of its chorizo really shines through in this new flavour.”
