Glaziers from East Anglian building supplies firm Kent Blaxill have completed a complex reglazing project involving 10 large Victorian rooflights at the Grade II*-listed Sudbury Library.

The 9sq m metal rooflight frames had to be dismantled in 12 segments and carefully tagged as each lantern light is a unique size.

The frames were then sent away for shot-blasting and repainting with seven coats of Historic England-approved paint.

Once the rooflights had been reinstalled, a total of 1,080 individually-cut replacement panes of 6mm toughened anti-sun glass (tinted to control heat and glare in the library below) were glazed into the frames.

In all, it took four glaziers seven weeks to complete the project on what was previously the town’s Corn Exchange, originally built in 1841.

Neil Currell, Kent Blaxill installations manager, said: “It was a unique and challenging project with each piece of glass having to be individually cut and fitted, and with every detail having to be approved by Historic England.”

The scheme was designed by Concertus Design & Property Consultants, which also acted as contract administrator on behalf of the client, Suffolk County Council.
