IPSWICH Building Society has confirmed plans to launch a new agency in Mildenhall from next month.

The society, which says the move follows “very positive responses” from the local community, has signed an agreement with estate agents Balmforth which will host the agency within its offices in the town’s High Street.

Paul Winter, chief executive of the Ipswich Building Society, said: “We are delighted from the responses we had from Mildenhall which clearly told us that the community wants a local building society in the town and we believe it is important to offer an alternative to the high street banks.”

Robert Lewis, managing partner at Balmforth, added: “This is very good news for the town and for us as a local business.

“The dedicated area inside our offices for Ipswich Building Society will fit very well into our space and all our staff are very excited about it.”

The move by the Ipswich to open an agency in Mildehall follows a decision by the Nationwide Building Society earlier this year to close its branch in the town.

Nationwide said the branch was no longer viable, with its decision leaving customers facing a journey to Newmarket, Ely or Bury St Edmunds in order to use a branch.

Three members of Balmforth’s staff will undergo training with Ipswich Building Society over the next six weeks ahead of the agency opening on November 1.

On Wednesdays October 17 and October 24, an Ipswich Building Society branch manager will be available at Balmforth by appointment for anyone who would like to open an account ahead of the opening.

Call 01638 711171 to book an appointment or register your interest.

An official celebration of the opening is planned at the Balmforth offices on Saturday, November 3.
