Rival low-fare airlines easyJet and Ryanair both carried an increased number of passengers last month.

More than 6.61million people travelled with easyJet, 8.4% up on the total for August 2013, while Ryanair carried 9.4m passengers, an increase of 4% on the same month a year ago.

More than 64.33m passengers travelled with easyJet in the 12 months ending August 2014, a 6.4% rise on the figure for the 12 months ending August 2013.

And Ryanair’s figure for the 12 months ending August 2014 was 83.4m, a 4% increase on the previous 12 months.

Flights by easyJet operated at 94.2% of capacity last month while Ryanair reported a load factor of 93%. Both figures represent a new record for the companies, which are among the largestest opertors at Stansted Airport.

The passenger boom seems set to continue into September, with easyJet saying it expects to have its busiest-ever day tomorrow with 1,451 flights carrying more than 210,000 passengers.
