A group of nine apprentices from e2v technoligies has finished among the runners-up at the end of a six-month challenge to recognised the best in team-work among apprentices in the UK.

The Brathay Apprentice Challenge, supported by the National Apprenticeship Service, tested the team-building, leadership, logistical and communication abilities of the teams, through community and charity work and a two-day adventure finale.

The team from Chelmsford-based e2v raised more than £3,000 for Haven Hospices and Cancer Research UK and completed community projects involving the refurbishment of Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club’s pavilion and Chelmsford Scout Hut.

At the end of the finale, which culminated with a whaler boat race across Lake Windermere, in the Lake District, the e2v team finished joint third, alongside a team from British Airways.

The contest was won by PepsiCo, with Qineti1q in second place. Other finalists included teams from Virgin Media, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn, Oxley Developments (part of Barrow Engineering Projects)and South Worcestershire College.

Between them, the eight finalists raised more than £30,000 for a range of charities, as well as holding school talks and media interviews to explain how apprenticeships enable young people to earn while they learn in a real job, gaining a real qualification with real career prospects

The finalists were selected from more than 110 teams and more than 1,000 apprentices who entered the competition. Since January, the competitors have made more than 360 school visits to talk about the benefits of apprenticeships and delivered 60 community projects. The teams also recruited more than 50 new businesses to offer apprenticeships.

Chris Stubbs, a member of the e2v team, said: “We’ve put a lot of time and dedication into the challenge and learnt a lot along the way, including our leadership, team working and planning skills; we proved this by winning the final boat race overall.

“We’re really happy coming joint third with British Airways which just shows how close the competition really was.”

Company spokesman Russell Rickett added: “Apprenticeships are a vital part of our organisation and to see our apprentices perform so well in the apprentice team of the year competition makes us all very proud. This is a huge achievement for both our organisation and our individual apprentices.”

Godfrey Owen, chief executive of Brathay Trust, said: “e2v are a great example of how offering an enhanced apprenticeship experience, by getting apprentices involved in corporate social responsibility projects or competitions, can benefit both apprentices and their companies.

“With the huge amount of participants this year, the country’s employers are proving they are committed to Apprenticeships and their apprentices.”
