Judges will be looking in particular at the following:

  • Explanation of ingredients used in produce - evidence of locally sourced content where appropriate
  • Range of products
  • Presentation of food - colour and display of goods
  • Value for money
  • Evidence of preparation and storage facilities
  • Where people can obtain product/s

Bread, Suffolk Food Hall, Ipswich
Helena Doy, one of last years finalists, is based within the Suffolk Food Hall, Wherstead near Ipswich and in addition to a retail base here, also bakes for hotels, restaurants, delicatessens and farm shops across the area.  Bread offers a wide range of bread products including focaccia, ciabatta and many flavoured breads as well as the more traditional tin loaves and bloomers.  All bread is baked using organic flour.

Humble Cake, Flixton
Humble Cake started in April 2007 born out of the desire to offer artisan baking to the cake eating public of Norfolk and Suffolk from a rural base.  With inspiration from London patisseries, their cakes are baked in small batches using traditional baking methods.  Owned by Gemma Parker, the variety of cakes produced regularly changes to take into account fresh and seasonal ingredients with fruit sourced from local farms, shops and individuals.

Sweet Things by Nina, Halesworth
From their very first farmers market at Halesworth in 2005, Sweet Things have offered the Suffolk public high quality handmade tartes, using the finest quality ingredients.  Every tarte is baked fresh the day before each farmers market and the entire range is wholly inspired by those available in France, the home of fine patisseries.  Sweet Things has grown since its beginning and now, in addition to the farmers markets, supplies many pubs as part of their daily menus.

Our 2007 winners, The Cake Shop are long established in Suffolk and are an award winning artisan bakery using hand-crafted techniques passed down by three generations of master bakers.  In addition to supplying a wide selection of local restaurants and retail outlets, their shop in the Thoroughfare continues to produce a wide selection of breads and cakes for their customers.

The Patisserie, Long Melford
