Farewell to the comrades - and the odds aren't with them
BAD news for the comrades. Corals the bookies shortened th odds on the Tories to win the next election and lengthened those on Labour as a result of Tony Blair's "I did it my way" speech which, begrudgingly, made passing reference to his brooding Chancellor.
It seems Corals don't think Labour has anyone who can match Blair's oratory, skills, and political nouse. So it's a big problem for the comrades. Do they go with their gut instinct and choose Gordon Brown or do they look elsewhere - assuming of course, any Cabinet heavyweight is prepared to pitch in for a bruising fight.
If Brown does take over, it'll scupper my mate Peter Hain's chances of becoming deputy. Comrades at the East of England reception last night doubted if the electorate (ie England) would tolerate a Scottish prime minister and a Welsh deputy.
Blair's speech was a masterclass for Brown. It was witty, reflective, and full of pride. It struck just the right note. He could be forgiven for being wistful - after all, 13 conferences as party leader is an astounding acheivementwhich nobody can deny.
If our Gordon wants to wow the country, he's got a big job on his hands to match Tony - and, more importantly, David Cameron
