Clinton shines
AFTER the Lord Mayor's Show, someone has to shovel up the s*** and who better than Bill (I did not have sexual relations with that woman) Clinton.
In reality, Clinton gave a brilliant speech in Manchester, entreating the comrades to go back to their constituencies and tell with pride the Blair story, of how the public services are better, people in Britain are no longer in dire straights, that global poverty is being tackled and climate change is very much on the Labour agenda.
He did all he could to endorse Gordon Brown as the next leader - how well will that have not gone down with Cherie - but unlike his 2002 conference speech in Blackpool, he didn't mention the Tories once. He still hasn't forgiven John Major for his support of Preisdent George Bush in the 1992 US election which Clinton won. That's why he's such pals with the Comrades.
Otherwise, today has been boring, enlivened only by Jon Cruddas's decision to run for the deputy leadership. Cruddas is the little known MP for Dagenham, so I doubt if he'll get anywhere. However, it would be refreshing for a London Essex MP to be elected to a top job in the party
Time to sign off from Manchester. I've one more story to file and I'll be on a train tomorrow morning.
Bournemouth and the Tories from Saturday. What a thrilling prospect.
