The House of Lost Causes
WHEN we replace the House of Lords with an elected upper chamber, what will it be called?
Let's hope it's not the Senate (or House of the Flying Daggers, if you get the Caesarean connection). Although very grand sounding, I doubt if Labour MPs will want to support a name associated with the United States, even though the Yanks took the title from Rome.
I suppose it will have to be House of Something or other, but as those elected are likely just to be a bunch of superannuated politicians, retreads from a life in the Commons who want a quiet but handsomely paid lifestyle in old age, we don't want it called House of the Wise Ones.
How about House of the Nations and Regions of the United Kingdom? That won't do - the UK might not exist if the Scots get too pushy.
The House of Lost Causes might do. Or how about House of Cards, after the novels featuring Francis Urquart. Then the whole pack of them might can fall into the Thames and drift off into the sunset.
