Clegg the Unbeliever

NICK Clegg doesn't believe in God. The new Liberal Democrat leader may be married to a practicing Roman Catholic and is bringing up his kids as Catholics, but when asked in the interview on BBC Radio 5 Live, "Do you believe in God?", Mr Clegg replied: "No."

The Lib Dems and their predecessors the Liberals have always by non-conformists in outlook. While you have to praise Clegg for his honesty in answering a direct question with a direct answer, he won't have endeared himself to millions who may not go to church, but nevertheless believe there is a supreme being looking over the universe.

If He is overlooking the universe He's not doing a very good job with our world! Pain, grief, suffering, not to mention religious persecution, since time immemorial.

I'm rather pleased. The trouble with politicians who believe in God is that their faith gives them the ultimate cop-out. "God will judge me on this decision" is one way of pushing the electorate into second place in terms of accountability. I don't like the idea of a serious politician deferring responsibility for his actions to an invisible, mythic being, whatever creed it may be borne of.

Politicians should forget God - at least while in office - and put the people first.

Besides which, last time I looked at his 'manifesto' (ie the bible) God appeared to have some strangely out-dated views that don't really chime with today's social values ... and if He stood for public office in human form I personally doubt he would win an election!
