The Mafia: The real reason for the ban on drugs and prostitution
Both drugs and prostitution are impossible to police with zero tolerance (without completely unacceptable violations of civil liberties such as CCTV in private property and toilets etc). This is because, although there are many people who indirectly suffer because of these trades, there is no direct victim.
Take the legal aspect:
Assuming the "gear" is OK, why would a user grass up a dealer or vice versa? Both are happy with their end of the bargain. This is completely different to a robbery, assault or rape where there is an "injured party" who is likely to report the incident to the authorities.
Same with prostitution. The punter gets his fun, the whore gets her cash! Who's going to file a complaint to the police?
Take the moral aspect:
Alcohol is the biggest cause of violent crime, and drug-related machine/automobile accidents. Whereas drugs such as LSD and cannabis tend, unless used to extreme, to only effect adversely those with pre-existing mental conditions. Schizophrenics certainly shouldn't smoke pot, or anything else with psychadelic effects. Alcohol is equally dangerous for those who have a tendency towards temper- and there are probably more people fitting the latter than the former. One problem with alcohol compared to other drugs is it gives the feeling one is in control. A good example is with driving- whilst alcohol and pot both reduce driving abilities, pot smokers are more aware of their reduced abilities and tend to drive "within their limits", in the same way that an OAP would.
Tobacco is the biggest cause of drug-related deaths, and is one of the most addictive drugs known to man- in the same league as heroin or crack.
Both these substances are readily available in shops the world over...
As for prostitution, is it any more moral for a man to "wine and dine" a woman for the sole purpose of having uncommitted sex, than to directly pay for it? In my opinion, the former is worse, as it can lead to emotional distress for the woman who believes she is entering into a genuine romantic relationship.
Bottom line is it is a) impossible to enforce effectively either drug dealing/use or prostitution. A waste of police time, court time and prison space, which could be better used for real criminals such as murderers and robbers.
b) impossible to argue that either of these practises are more immoral than what is allowed under the law.
So who does this law benefit. It doesn't help drug users (many of those are "self medicating" due to an untreated psychiatric condition). It doesn't help prostitutes or their users, who are often in need of professional counselling. Only one body benefits. ORGANISED CRIME.
When "prohibition" was brought in to the USA with regard to alcohol, who benefited? again ORGANISED CRIME.
The reason that these laws remain on the statute books of most states is a testament to the power of ORGANISED CRIME .
