Mabel the owl has returned to her familiar perch in Christchurch Park, after six months away for the breeding season.

The popular bird of prey returned to her hollow last week according to park staff, having disappeared in early March, and has already attracted the attention of park visitors.

Park and wildlife ranger Joe Underwood said: “This is the seventh year she has come back we think. She disappears in early March during the breeding season, helps her youngsters grow up, and as soon as they young owlets are capable of life on their own she returns.

“We have had people come up to the park staff asking about her, and it’s great to see her back in all her splendour.”

Park rangers now believe the majestic creature, who is showing off her new feathers, is the country’s most famous owl in terms of publicity.
