An Essex food store has scooped the Great Taste Shop of the Year Award at the annual Great Taste Golden Fork Dinner in London.
Judges said The Food Company, based at Marks Tey, excelled in all areas, especially in the fish and meat departments which judges described as “magnificent”.
This is the first time the Great Taste scheme, which held its event on Monday, has made an award to a retailer.
John Farrand, managing director of The Guild of Fine Food, organisers of Great Taste, said: “For nearly 20 years The Guild of Fine Food has helped and supported independent retailers and over the years we have run a number of initiatives to find the best food shops in the land.
“This is the first time we have brought the judging criteria within Great Taste and we wanted producers of Great Taste award winning food and drink to be central to the nomination process – they after all are working with fine food retailers every day. Simply put, the very best producers in the UK nominated the very best shops in the UK.”
Great Taste judges visited, unannounced, to judge the experience as a customer and The Food Company in Marks Tey received the highest praise and highest overall score.
“The Food Company was praised for the provenance of its food, customer service, accessibility and information, sensible prices and the enthusiasm of every person in the team,” said Mr Farrand.
