Movers & Shakers: Philip Taylor and Erin Davidson made partners at architects Feilden & Mawson

BURY St Edmunds architects Feilden and Mawson has appointed two new partners.
Philip Taylor has been with the firm since 2004 and Erin Davidson joined the practice a year later. Their appointment takes the number of partners within the firm, which has offices in Bury, Norwich, London, Cambridge and Prague, to a total of 13.
Managing partner Robert Todd said: “Erin and Philip are great additions to the partner team at Feilden and Mawson. Both have a wealth of expertise on high-profile projects. Their knowledge and ambition will be important assets, expanding F&Ms skills base and enhancing our reputation for quality and integrity.”
Canadian-born Erin Davidson, who has wanted to be an architect since she was nine years old, moved to the UK to fulfil her ambition of working on some of the world’s finest historic properties. She is fascinated by the layer upon layer of history to be found in old buildings.
A design team leader, she works primarily within the conservation field, in particular renovation and new build in an historic context.
“I believe today’s architecture should look as if it was built today. If I am putting an extension on an historic building my approach is to make it as contemporary as possible, but sympathetic to its historical setting at the same time,” she said.
Erin enjoys outdoor sports including scuba diving, alpine cross-country skiing and kayaking.
Originally from Liverpool, Philip Taylor moved to Hampshire in his late teens, studying at Southampton University and Greenwich Polytechnic, where he gained his degree in architecture.
He worked for a number of architects – including one of his former lecturers – before joining F&M in 2004. He became an associate in 2007 and is thrilled that his work has now been recognised with a partnership.
A senior technologist who looks after the delivery of projects from concept through to completion, he has more than 20 years’ experience in the construction industry and specialises in security implementation.
“I have worked on many interesting projects for central government – including the refurbishment of the former Middlesex Guildhall in Parliament Square for the new UK Supreme Court,” said Philip. “I was technical adviser to the Ministry of Justice, looking after quality control and compliance.”
Philip has won awards for both conservation projects and his design and access work for the disabled. His current work includes projects within listed buildings on the Parliamentary Estate and for the Cabinet Office. He enjoys sailing, and also loves skiing and motorcycles.
: : LUXURY eatery the Long Melford Swan has promoted two existing members of staff to oversee front of house ahead of the imminent opening of its second outlet in Hadleigh.
Rachael Allen, 25, from Long Melford, who has been with the team since day one, will oversee the management of the restaurant, while Ed Keith, 28 from Bury St. Edmunds, has been appointed to bar manager.
Stuart Inns, which opened The Swan in 2011, is currently in the process of commissioning a second outlet and has spent several months training its already experienced staff to manage The Swan in the absence its proprietors, brother and sister team, Oliver and Lorna Macmillan.
Lorna said of the appointment: “Over the past year we have worked tirelessly to form a team that provides not only delicious and brilliantly crafted cuisine but also the best customer service Suffolk has to offer.
“Racheal and Ed have always been core members of our team and are very popular with our existing customers so we are very confident they will continue to grow the business over the coming months whilst we focus on the opening of our second outlet.”
: : IPSWICH-based web and design agency 2Cs Communications has appointed two new members of staff as part of a new initiative to provide talented young people with full time employment.
Bill Morton, 18, from Stowmarket, joins the team as junior web developer, while Billy Brundle, 19, from Claydon, has been appointed to IT support.
Bill, who attended Stowupland High School and has A-levels in IT, psychology and media studies, has been appointed as part of a national apprentice scheme and is already proving a popular addition to the company’s experienced team of web developers.
Billy, who also studied IT and left Suffolk New College with a National Diploma in the subject, is working closely with third party IT providers to support not only the 2Cs team but also its sister company, Consense.
The new employment initiative was set up by 2Cs director Julia Grant,who has worked her way up through the company over the past 20 years.
She said: “We are delighted to welcome Bill and Billy to the team as part of our new youth employment scheme.
“Whilst experience counts for a lot in this industry we feel the younger generation aren’t being given a chance in the workplace, a theme which is reflected in the current high levels of youth unemployment.
“Bill and Billy have only been with us a matter of weeks but they have already come on leaps and bounds and we suspect they won’t be in junior positions for long.
“We would urge all local companies to give young talent a chance.
“There’s a real misconception that the youth don’t want to work but this couldn’t be further from the truth and our two new recruits prove this.”
: : JOCKEY Club Racecourses (JCR), the UK’s largest racecourse group, has announced the appointment of Sophie Able as regional head of sales for its east region, which includes Newmarket Rowley Mile, Newmarket July Course, Huntingdon, Market Rasen and Nottingham racecourses.
Sophie is currently general manager at Huntingdon Racecourse. In her new role based out of Newmarket, Sophie will be responsible for raceday and events and conferences sales across each of the racecourses, including sponsorship, hospitality and restaurants, reporting to JCR’s east regional director, Amy Starkey.
Sophie, 30, has worked at Huntingdon Racecourse for seven years, initially as commercial manager and, since the summer of 2008, in her current position. She had previous sales and marketing experience at both York and Doncaster racecourses.
Amy Starkey said: “Having recruited Sophie at Huntingdon Racecourse seven years ago, I have watched her impressive development as a racecourse manager.
“The creation of the new east region within Jockey Club Racecourses enables us to offer her this new position as regional head of sales which suits her skills set admirably.”
Sophie said: “I am delighted to have been given this opportunity to develop further my career within The Jockey Club and I am especially pleased to be able to continue working with Amy Starkey.
“As well as being responsible for overall sales at our racecourses in Newmarket, Nottingham and Market Rasen, this new position means that I will still be involved with Huntingdon where for five years I have been privileged to be part of a very strong team, particularly our chairman Paul Taiano and the racecourse committee.”
Paul Taiano, chairman of Huntingdon Racecourse, said: “Sophie has done a superb job in charge of Huntingdon Racecourse for the last four years and I am sorry to see her go.
“However, we will not be losing her completely and I am thrilled that she is to be JCR’s regional head of sales in the east, a richly deserved promotion after her good work here at Huntingdon.”
: : Chartered accountants and business advisers Larking Gowen has promoted Samantha Meadows to manager at its Ipswich office and Keith Davies to the role of payroll manager at its Diss office.
Sam joined Larking Gowen in 2008 and is based at the firm’s Ipswich office. She works in the corporate department and manages audits for a wide range of clients, from small companies to large groups. In her new role Sam will also have the responsibility of overseeing all staff matters in her team.
“I am pleased with my promotion to manager and the extra challenges it brings. I look forward to managing my team while still assisting clients with their audits,” she said.
Keith joined Larking Gowen in 2007 and is responsible for running the payroll team.
“I am thrilled with my promotion to payroll manager and look forward to my future with the firm.” he said.
Sam lives in Stowmarket with her husband and two children and enjoys both reading and running in her spare time.
Keith lives in Norwich with his wife and enjoys going to the theatre and keeping fit at the gym.
