Hundreds of students in west Suffolk will be frantically hitting the refresh button on their UCAS applications on A-level results day.

County Upper School, Bury St Edmunds

A total of 100 students took exams and achieved an A*-E pass rate of 99.3% and an A*-C pass rate of 82%.

Vicky Neale, headteacher, said: “Every year, A-level results day is about celebrating the success of our students from across the ability range and seeing them move on to their chosen career paths.

“Today is no exception and I am delighted that the strength of our results once again means that, despite all the changes, our students are excited to be going to the destinations of their choice.

“Amongst a large number of students with the highest grades are this year’s head students, Ben Amroota and Rebecca Severy, with A*A*, A*, A and 4 A*s respectively together with Jack Emmerson with 3 A*s who, along with others, will make an excellent doctor.

“I thank our parents for their support and the staff for all they do. On behalf of their teachers and tutors, I congratulate the students – we wish them every success for the next phase of their lives.”

King Edward VI School, Bury St Edmunds

Students achieved a A*-E pass rate of 99.6% and 80% of pupils at the school gained A*-C grades.

Stuart Small, head of sixth form, said: “We are very proud of our Year 13 students and we are delighted with their achievements.

“Their dedication and conscientiousness have been rewarded with a terrific set of qualifications.

“Sixth form study is a young person’s passport to the next stage of his or her life and we wish all our Year 13 students well as they progress to university, college, apprenticeships or employment”.

Thetford Academy

% of A* to C grades – 50pc (59pc)

Principal Dan Carter said: “This was a comparatively small cohort but they have achieved some very strong results that each and every student should be proud of. The changes to AS and A Levels produced some challenges, which our students and staff have more than met with some notably strong performances in languages, computer science, and further maths.”

St Benedict’s Catholic School, Bury St Edmunds

A total of 63 students sat the exams and achieved an A* to C pass rate of 85% and an A* to E pass rate of 100%.

Headteacher Kate Pereira said: “We are very proud of what our students have achieved and want to say well done to each and every one of them.

“The students really deserve this incredible success after working so hard and I hope they enjoy celebrating today!

“It is another year of excellent results for the sixth form at St Benedict’s achieved by very hard work from staff and students, strong parental support and by ensuring that students remain supported and challenged to be the best they can be throughout their time in the sixth form.

“We are a close knit community at St Benedict’s which means that every student is known well and helped to achieve their dreams.

“Students can now move on to the next stage of their journey with pride and confidence.”

Culford School, near Bury St Edmunds

Students achieved a 99% A*-E pass rate and 71% of pupils recorded A*-C grades.

Julian Johnson-Munday, headteacher, said: “We are very pleased with this set of excellent grades, particularly the high number of very good individual results. We are also very proud of the value added, as Pupils and teachers work very hard indeed when preparing for the examinations”.

Thomas Gainsborough School

Students pulled off an A*-C pass rate of 61% and A*-E pass rate of 96%. In total 100 students sat the A-level and other Level 3 qualifications this summer.

Headteacher Wayne Lloyd said: “Once again, we are encouraged by the progress of our students with these results. This demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the young people of this area, through the high quality teaching and excellent support that the school has provided them with.”

Kenny Alexander, director of sixth form at Thomas Gainsborough, added: “These results will open many doors to the young people who have worked so hard to achieve them. We wish the students all the very best for the next phase of their lives, be that university, college, apprenticeships or employment.”

A level results of particular note were the results achieved by Jasmine Bayliss-Dagg, Emily Sharp, and Lucy Root among others.

Jasmine achieved A*, A*, A, B (Further Maths, Maths, Physics and Chemistry), Emily A*, A*, A, A, B (Sociology, EPQ, English Lit, Photography and History), Lucy A*, A, A, A (EPQ, English Lit, Geography and History).

Samuel Ward Academy

The school is celebrating a rise in its A-level results with an A*-C pass rate of 80%, compared to 73% last year. The overall pass rate was 98%.

Andy Hunter, newly-recruited headteacher of Samuel Ward Academy, said: “All at the school are very proud of the achievements, commitment and efforts of the students who I know already were ably-supported by dedicated staff.

“I am excited to be joining a sixth form on the up at the same time the school will benefit from new buildings and upgraded sixth form facilities.”

Tim Coulson, chief executive of the Unity Schools Partnership of which the academy is a founder member, added: “I would like to congratulate all students, staff, parents and the school community for playing their part in these successful results.

“We wish the young people every success as they go onto the next stage of their lives.”

Kevin Geall, head of sixth form at Samuel Ward Academy, said: “It is an incredibly exciting time for the sixth form. With our current Year 12 students on course to excel, I expect more record-breaking student achievement in the very near future.”

Notable student achievements included Andrew Quarrell (A*, A*, A*); Thomas Hudson (A*, A, A, A); Joel Ridgway (A*, A, A, C); Madeline Brown (A*, A, A); Matthew Wood (A*, A*, B); Daisy Heath (Dist*, Dist*, Dist) and Kiernan Harding (Dist*, Dist*, Dist*).

Ormiston Sudbury Academy

Students achieved an A*-C pass rate of 60% and an A*-E pass rate of 94%.

More students than ever before at the academy, which is sponsored by Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT), gained places at top universities including Sheffield, East Anglia and St Mary’s.

Ormiston Sudbury Academy principal Caroline Wilson said:“I am delighted that the hard work of staff and students had paid off. I would like to congratulate them and also pay tribute to all our parents and carers for all their support which has been so important in helping student to secure the grades they need to succeed in the next stage of their education or as they go into the workplace.

“We wish all our students every success for the future.”

Nick Hudson, CEO of Ormiston Academies Trust, said: “I would like to congratulate students, staff and the whole school community at Ormiston Sudbury Academy on these brilliant results, which are testament to their hard work and determination.

“As a trust, it is our absolute priority to ensure that every student has the opportunity to fulfil their potential and the skills to succeed whether going on to study at a leading university or entering the world of work. We look forward to working with the academy to build on these achievements.”

Mildenhall College Academy

Overall pass rates are not yet available at the school is awaiting results for music A-level.

Principal Susan Byles said: “OCR revealed yesterday that they had failed to mark part of the students’ work and are trying to do this ‘as quickly as possible’. This is very poor as students’ university places are at stake.

“I would like to congratulate all of our students who are so deserving of this excellent set of results and I wish them the very best in the future.”

The percentage of students achieving the higher grades of A*-C has increased from last year to 64% which is testament to the hard work of the students and the skills of their teachers.

Mrs Byles said every student’s achievements are to be celebrated, but for some their results also reflect a remarkable ability to overcome adversity.

Emily Dobbin, 19, whose father Simon was the victim of a terrible attack which left him with life-changing injuries, has completed her sixth form courses with a Distinction star/Distinction in double health and social care and a merit in applied science.

During her final year in the sixth form Emily’s family were filmed for the TV series DIY SOS when the community came together to refurbish the family’s home in Mildenhall, making it suitable for the long-term care that Simon needs.

Emily, who has been caring for her father, now aims to study paramedic science at St George’s University, London.

Hannah Bokor, 18, overcame health issues to achieve a B in English literature, C in history and D in biology. She intends to study history at university.

“These students, like many others, have shown remarkable courage and perseverance and their results are a credit to them,” Mrs Byles said.
