It’s a nail biting scenario – and hundreds of students in north Essex have been nervously making their way into their school or college to pick up their A-level results.

Colchester County High School for Girls

School leaders have revealed students at CCHSG achieved the best set of A-level results in the history of the school.

This is despite the added challenge of the new A-level courses, bosses said.

Executive Principal Gillian Marshall added: “We are extremely proud of the students and these outstanding results will form a stepping stone to future success.

“We thank them for their tremendous contribution to CCHSG and wish them every happiness in the future.”

Felsted School

Of the 84 students who took A-levels at Felsted in 2018, almost 90% of all grades were C or better and the pass rate was higher than 99%.

Headmaster Chris Townsend said: “This is a very pleasing set of results, especially in a year when there has been a great deal of change to A-levels.

“They reflect a great deal of hard work from students and teachers, and I am very pleased to see so many Felsted pupils going off to the best universities around the world.”

He added: “I am very proud of the hard work done by this outstanding group of young men and women. Congratulations to everyone who took exams at Felsted, and the very best wishes for your future studies or careers.”

Hedingham School

Chiefs say they are delighted with another successful year at A-level with students achieving a good set of results.

A total of 97% of students achieved A*-E, while 65% received A*-C grades.

Headteacher John Panayi said: “We are pleased with the performances of the students.

“This has been a challenging year for students with the introduction of new, untested qualifications in most of the A-level subjects.

“This level of uncertainty naturally adds more pressure for the staff and students to deal with.

“Hedingham School has continued to work closely with students to ensure that they achieve the currency to move on to the next stage of their career.

“I wish them all a successful future.”

Moulsham High School, Chelmsford

The Chelmsford school is celebrating a 100% A* to E pass rate in all subjects, with a 100% pass rate in all vocational qualifications.

82% of all grades were A*-C.

Particularly impressive were maths and English literature, with 18 students achieving A* and A grades

Executive headteacher Mr Mark Farmer said: “We are immensely proud of all the students’ achievements.

“It is fantastic that we have several students who gained A* in all of their subjects, but equally we celebrate all students who achieved excellent grades across the board, fulfilling their potential and helping with their next steps, including many students going onto Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.

“We would like to thank staff and parents who have supported the students exceptionally well but, ultimately, we wish to congratulate the students for achieving these wonderful results which they rightly deserve.

“We are proud of them all.”

The Sixth Form College, Colchester

Students at The Sixth Form College, Colchester celebrated a significant rise in results compared to last year, particularly in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.

There is an increase at the college of nearly 10% in the proportion of A* to B top A-level grades achieved.

The year group of approximately 1,300 upper sixth students who studied A-levels at the college this summer achieved a subject A to E grade pass rate of over 98% and an A* to B rate of close to 50%.

100% pass rates were achieved in 30 separate A-level courses including in computing, geography, music, religious studies, French, further maths, classical civilisation, German, Italian, history of art, music technology and textiles.

Ian MacNaughton, the college principal, described the results as “fantastic”, adding: “Our students’ achievements are really excellent and they must be very warmly congratulated.”

Amongst the very large cohort of high achievers are:

? Hannah Seabrook, who previously attended Colne Community College achieved four A*s in maths, further maths, chemistry and physics and will now study for a degree in natural sciences at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.

? Taylor Young, who previously attended Thurstable School and achieved four A* grades in maths, further maths, physics and computing. She has successfully achieved a place at Selwyn College, Cambridge to study computer science.

? Twins Ella Marr and Amy Marr both studied A-levels in psychology, law and biology - and both remarkably achieved A*, A*, A grades in their subjects.

Ella and Amy have now both successfully achieved their grades to study for a degree in psychology at the University of York.

? Abi Doyle who previously attended Great Baddow High School achieved A* and A grades in biology, German and psychology. Abi has now successfully achieved a place to study psychological and behavioural sciences at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge.

? Isabell Holmes, who previously attended St Albans School, achieved A* and A grades in maths, further maths, physics and chemistry and will now study for a degree in engineering at Trinity College, Cambridge.

Thurstable Sixth Form Centre

A total of 99% of all students at Thurstable Sixth Form Centre passed their A-levels this year.

Headteacher Miles Bacon at Thurstable, said: “Our sixth form does a great job of making sure that every student receives a tailored programme of study that meets their individual needs, and gives them the excellent teaching and support that they need to succeed.

“This is another set of results that reflects this, and was hard earned by our students and staff.

“It’s great to see more than half of entries scoring the highest grades, and even better to see almost all of our Year 13 gaining the qualifications they need to take up their chosen next steps in their education and their lives.

“I would like to pay tribute to them, their teachers, and their parents.”

Witham Sixth Form

Witham Sixth Forms said it was proud of the class of 2018 as a total of 55% of students secured A* to C grades or a Distinction* to Pass in their chosen courses.

All students – 100 per cent - who took art, business, health and social care and sport achieved top grades of A* to C, or equivalent.

Debbie Kershaw, director of Witham Sixth Forms, said: “This is a wonderful cohort of students who have been at the forefront of evolving the provision at Witham Sixth Forms into a new era.

“We pride ourselves on offering the correct courses for the young people of Witham to ensure they are well equipped for the next stage in their lives.

“These results will see our students accessing the right universities, apprenticeships or employment for them which is one of our core aims.”
