An MP has called for enforcement on the A120 as nearly 400 motorists a day were recorded breaking the limit.

Witham MP Priti Patel said April’s survey in the Surrex hamlet between Marks Tey and Coggeshall caught 2,336 drivers going over the 60mph limit in just six days, out of 138,820 vehicles on the road.

Ms Patel said: “The A120 is one of the most dangerous stretches of single carriageway in the country. More needs to be done to make this road safer and I urge the police to take action.”

  • I totally agree, Cameras are needed. The only way speeding "idiots" will be brought to book is by hitting them in the pocket and points ! Incidentally the percentage Mrs Patel refers to is negligible when compared to those speeding on London Road Beccles. 34%-actual police records, but they have "limited resources" according to those in charge !!!

  • I use this stretch of the A120 quite often, and I'm surprised people can exceed 60mph. I find I'm usually following a bus or a truck at about 50mph or, even worse, one of those funny little vans-with-windows driven by an elderly person at about 40mph. Perhaps these incidents of speeding occurred in off-peak times, when the road is less busy? The volume of traffic is enough to warrant a dual carriageway, but will the funds be made available?

  • @Boris.."My dream" ?, it is not a dream, but an extremely practical solution to a problem which by your own admission has been building up for years !, pretending you can paper over the long term under investment in our Road Transport Infrastructure is just sheer folly !, by investing in our infrastructure, your not only solving log term problems, but also creating jobs, and improving the economy !, surely something MP's should be doing all the time ?

  • To Freedomf. The dual carriageway from Marks Tey to Braintree was estimated at £500 million, a good many years ago, so it would probably cost a fair bit more now. The government has announced that its cuts will fall on transport and roads, among other areas. Therefore your dream is not going to happen. Just get used to it. Meanwhile some speed cameras along that stretch will be useful for keeping us all in line. They will cost a lot less than £500 million. I am not a fan of Priti, still less of her party, but on this matter she is spot on. Let's make Surrex, and other places along that route, a bit safer.

  • How about doing something much more constructive !, like making the road a dual carriageway ?, speed cameras will mean it will end up like the A140 !
