A second man has died on Suffolk’s roads following a collision involving a van and a pedestrian near Sudbury.

Police were called to the A134 between Newton and Assington after a Ford Transit van driver reported he had been involved in a collision with a man at around 6.20pm.

Officers launched a search party and the body of a man was located at around 7.30pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed after police opened a preliminary investigation.

Earlier in the day a 26-year-old driver was killed when his car struck a tree in Homefield Road, Haverhill, near the junction with Moon Hall Lane.

It took place at around 11.45am. Witnesses to both incidents are urged to come forward.

A Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said: “Police were initially contacted by a driver around 6.20pm this evening who reported she was concerned for a man walking along the A134 at Newton.

“Officers immediately went to the area to see if the man could be located.

“Police then received a second call from a driver of a Ford Transit van who reported he had been involved in a collision on the road between Newton and Assington about 6.30pm.

“A search began in the area and at around 7.30pm the body of a man was located. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“The road has been closed while a preliminary investigation gets underway and police are asking anyone who may have been in the area around this time to come forward if you have any information that may assist the enquiry.”
