Nursery school tots have been learning how to draw caricatures of themselves under the expert guidance of a professional cartoonist.

Barrie Appleby, one of the regular artists on The Beano, is well known for his cartoons of characters such as Roger the Dodger and Gnasher.

As part of Annual National Storytelling Week, Mr Appleby visited Acton Playgroup and worked with around 20 children aged between two and four years.

The playgroup’s lead practitioner, Kim Schwenk, said: “We are using the week to push the importance of reading by focusing on illustrators as well as authors. We have been looking at Barrie’s books recently and the children loved having him in to show them how it’s done.”
