Acton Primary School, near Sudbury, remained closed today for safety reasons after it emerged that rain had leaked through a flat roof and onto electrical wiring.

The school recently had a new addition to the building to accommodate extra students as part of Suffolk County Council’s move to two-tier education.

But a spokeswoman at the school said the leak was on an old flat roof in the original part of the building.

One parent, who asked not to be named, complained that the school had been closed without notice which had caused difficulties for parents who needed to find last minute child care.

But the school spokeswoman said: “We had no choice but to close the school because it simply wasn’t safe to have water running through the electrics.

“We have had problems with the flat roof over the years but after the heavy rain, the water was just sitting there.

“It came through the roof into the toilets, the corridor, one of the kitchens, the resources area, one classroom and the playgroup area - and the floor is still flooded. We also have no electricity in the building at the moment.”

An electrician was at the school trying to fix the problem toda

The spokeswoman added: “Information will be posted on the school’s website as we get any updates. We would like to thank the parents who looked there this morning and didn’t send their kids in today.”
