Thousands of people will be flocking to Aldeburgh this weekend as the town stages its annual carnival and also a country show.

The carnival – theme Mardi Gras – will be taking place on the seafront, with plenty for families to enjoy during Saturday and Sunday, but the highlight, as always, will be the procession at 3.15pm on Monday when the streets will be packed for the noisy and colourful cavalcade of decorated floats and bands.

The Carnival Village will be in place all weekend with stalls on Crag Path and Moot Green and various sideshows, and tomorrow includes a Lollipop Hunt on the beach just north of the Lifeboat Station.

Sunday’s fun begins with the Mini Marathon, taking runners six miles through countryside to Thorpeness and back along the seafront.

There will also be Punch and Judy shows twice during the day, along with the Children’s Land Sports and the Egg Boat Race.

A United Songs of Praise closes the day.

As well as the procession, Monday’s events include swimming races in the sea, children’s sports, and an air-sea rescue demonstration.

In the evening, Carnival Queen Ellie Doubleday and her attendants Minnie Mulumba and Faye Potter will lead the Chinese lantern procession to the beach before the firework display.

The Aldeburgh Country Show will be on from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday with cookery displays, horse and carriage racing, antiques expert Elizabeth Talbot from BBC TV’s Bargain Hunt hosting her Antiques Interaction Show along with her small antique valuations, and a visit from Norfolk-based Harvey’s Shire Horses.

Other attractions include falconry displays, gun dog demonstrations, dog agility from Parham Paws, Trick Dog as seen on Channel Five, fun dog shows, a petting zoo, circus shows and workshops, musicians, and and a rural crafts exhibition.
