The Frinton-on-Sea secondary school had to send in a 30 second musical video to show why they should be chosen.

After passing that stage, a Radio 1 team came out to the college to see if the logistics would work to make the live broadcast possible.

On Monday, head of media studies teacher, Elissa Moore, was then grilled on-air by breakfast host Nick Grimshaw in an Apprentice-style interview. Before that Miss Moore had to rap on air as one of several challenges.

She said: “I was confident but so surprised; we are over the moon because we are all massive Radio 1 fans and for five students involved in this – it will be brilliant for their CVs.

“It was exciting and nerve-wracking being on air. Most of the students listened on Monday and although it’s half-term it quickly got round on Twitter that we had won.

“They said we were chosen because we were the most creative, innovative and original entry. We have never won anything like this before.”

Caroline Haynes, the college’s principal, said: “We are really excited to host Radio 1 and support Children in Need.”

The presenters will come to the college on November 10.
