A chamber music concert will celebrate violinist and leading Aldeburgh Music figure Hugh Maguire.

The concert will be given at Blythburgh Church by a collection of musicians - many who studied under him at the Britten-Pears School and as part of the Aldeburgh Quartet Residency Series.

Mr Maguire, who lived in the Saxmundham area and later in Peasenhall, died at 86 last June. A regular performer in the Britten years, he was invited by Peter Pears in 1978 to direct string studies at the Britten–Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies.

Born in Dublin, he was a founding conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland and set up a course in his home country modelled on Pro Corda at Leiston Abbey.

The former leader of the London Symphony and BBC Symphony orchestras will be remembered in concert from 2.30pm this Saturday. Entry is free, with seats available on a first come, first served basis. Charitable donations will be welcomed at the end.

There is free parking but extra travel time should be allowed as the concert coincides with Latitude festival.
