22:26 18 February 2014

A village has been shown plans for a new flood defence.

Residents in Blythburgh were today given the opportunity to view and discuss the plans that will protect the A12, decided by Suffolk County Council, the Environment Agency and Natural England in the village hall.

Work is set to start in March.

Those who visited saw the plans to build new embankments that takes wildlife and vegetation into account.

Jason Skilton, flood and water engineer for Suffolk County Council said: “It will protect the A12 which is a vital route for the north of the county.”

Sue Allen, chairman of the Blyth Estuary Group was pleased with the plans, but also wanted to see plans for the possibility of a sluice being installed.

Cliff Waller, a resident, said: “If they want to protect the A12 what they are doing is probably the right solution.”

  • So they can spend £1million on protecting this road which according to the BBC has been close twice once in 2007 and December last year. Yet they will not spend money curing the problems on a much more important route the A14 over the Orwell Bridge. Perhaps if they put in a lower speed limit and average speed cameras here as well, vehicle could proceed through the flood water on the rare occasions it occurs.
