A lifeboat crew was called out after a man was heard shouting for help in the water at Brightlingsea.
Thames Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public yesterday at about 7.40pm.
Clacton RNLI inshore lifeboat and Clacton Coastguard were sent to the scene.
The man had been in the water but was recovered safely by a local man in his rowing boat.
He was suffering with hypoglycaemia was tended to by the ambulance crew and later released.
