Brome/A140: Campaigners urge council to enforce 30mph limit at accident blackspot

CAMPAIGNERS have urged a council to enforce a 30mph speed limit because they say it is only a matter of time before someone is killed again.

Charlie Hall, Assistant Chief Constable of Suffolk Constabulary, headed a summit meeting, which included officials from Suffolk County Council, about the A140 and B1077 junction at Brome.

Redlingfield Parish has been fighting to get an existing speed camera near the junction turned on.

Police began reviewing the site, near Eye, when a young mother died after a crash at the junction in November.

Janet Norman-Philip, clerk for Redlingfield Parish Meeting said: “They are saying they will seriously consider a 30mph speed limit.

“To reduce the speed limit to 30 would be a good thing, at least it would mean any crash that did happened would be less likely to kill someone. At rush hour you are taking your life in your hands. As long as they do something that works, then it does not matter what it is.”

She said a new traffic light or roundabout system was also needed to reduce the accident risk.

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council said: “The county council is currently working with the police and reviewing the speed limit on this stretch of road. There are no immediate plans to change the road layout however the development of the industrial park in Eye could afford us the opportunity to make improvements. A report will be presented to the next meeting of the Road Safety Board in March which will look at the issue of speed limits in this area.”

A spokesman for Suffolk police said: “Police have been meeting with Suffolk County Council and local parish councils to discuss the A140 at Brome. Speed enforcement checks continue to be carried out along the A140, as they have been in the past.” Ms Norman-Philip said she would wait to see a copy of the county council report next month.

  • I travel to and from work through that part of the A140, at 'rush hour' both in the morning and evening. In my opinion, speed is not the issue where these accidents are concerned. Obviously, I don't see every car, but the ones on the road when I'm travelling there don't seem to exceed the 40mph speed limit even with the camera turned off. Typical SCC get it worng again. The issue is definitely the road layout, which they admit they have no intention of changing. The problem is frustration of drivers trying to turn right from both sides of the B1077 staggered junction. A 30mph limit will cause even more bunching along the A140, making it even harder for traffic to turn onto the main road, so even more drivers will 'take the chance' when there's no real gap to move into.
