Bury St Edmunds: Success for middle school at a difficult time

THE success of St Louis Middle School, in Bury St Edmunds, continues as it showed improvement in each areas of the Key Stage 2 schools’ league table, released yesterday.

The percentage of pupils achieving level 4 in English increased from 89% to 93% and in maths from 88% to 90%. And those attaining level 4 in both subjects went up from 81% to 88%.

Meanwhile, the percentage of pupils who have made two or more levels of progress in English between the ages of seven and 11 also went up from 76% to 88%.

At a time when middle schools are facing a massive change with closures planned as the education authority moves from three tiers to two it came as a real boost for acting head teacher Rose Heap as St Louis went from 39 in last year’s table to rise three places to 36, keeping it in the top 50 schools in Suffolk.

“We are very pleased in terms of our results that pupils are achieving and making progress at such a positive level.

“It reflects a lot of hard work by the teaching staff but our pupils are very keen to work hard and are supported by the parents and take on board our advice.

“A combination of these excellent facts is pleasing espcially at a time when it has been difficult for middle schools and it appears that we have made such good progress.

“We have some really good teachers here and it’s something that we are very proud of and we have very positive staff who are always looking to support and help children.

“There’s lots of opportunity for children and it gives them a positive outlook on school and life in general.

“We know that these test results are very important but we need to also make pupils very rounded and to be able to succeed if we want children to do well in the future.”
