Neil Hutson, 42, from Bury St Edmunds, is behind the attempt, which he is undergoing alongside fellow West Ham supporters Kevin Driscoll, his son Chas Driscoll, Bill Pearson and Sean Clarke.

The walk – which will take in 12 London football clubs in two days – is in memory of Kevin’s father Dennis, who was also a West Ham fan, and died from cancer, related to contact with asbestos, on March 13 last year aged 75.

St Nicholas Hospice Care, based in Bury, will receive 80% of the cash raised from the fundraiser, which will include an auction, as Dennis was cared for there before he passed away at home in Bury.

Mr Hutson said the walk, which is taking place from April 3 and will start and finish at the West Ham ground, could set a new Guinness World Record.

He said when the team completed the challenge at West Ham on April 5, having walked 73.3 miles, they would be on the pitch before the game against Liverpool.

Mr Hutson said: “I wanted to do something for Dennis because he’s a lovely guy and he used to do a bit of fundraising for the hospice with the darts league, and I just wanted to do something I didn’t think had been done really.”

Dennis, who worked for Vitec Videocom which is sponsoring the challenge, had been heavily involved with the Bury Interclub Dart League.

His son Kevin said: “The hospice were fantastic with him. It will be nice to give them something back.”

As well as supporting the hospice, 20% of funds will go to the Bobby Moore Fund which raises money for research into bowel cancer.

There will be an online auction which is going live at 5pm on April 30 followed by a live auction with ex-boxer Dave “Boy” Green at LP bar and restaurant in Bury at 7.30pm. Prizes will include signed football shirts. The team are looking for another sponsor as well as more auction prizes.

Call Mr Hutson on 01284 747088. To sponsor the team visit www.walk4dennis.co.uk.
