The Athenaeum in Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds.

THE REGISTER office in Bury St Edmunds is set to move to a new site in the town in November.

As part of the move to Suffolk House in Angel Hill, couples will be able to have a register office-style wedding at the Athenaeum which is across the square.

Suffolk County Council’s register office service is currently housed at St Margaret’s at New Shire Hall in Raingate Street, but it will operate from Suffolk House – which is also home to the town council offices – from November 12.

The move should take place between November 7-9 and during this time a small temporary office will be set up at the Suffolk Record Office where a limited service will be offered.

From December 1 this year local authority ceremonies will be able to take place in the Old Billiards Room in the Grade I-Listed Athenaeum.

Couples wanting a local authority wedding will have the choice of getting married there or at Suffolk House.

Other rooms in the Athenaeum, including the ballroom, are still available for private hire including weddings and conferences. These rooms can be booked via Mary Myers at Sodexo on 01284 735957.
