Bury St Edmunds: Plans are approved for Glastonbury Court care home and wellbeing centre

Plans for a new 80-bed care home and wellbeing centre in Bury St Edmunds have been given the go-ahead.


Care UK, working in partnership with Suffolk County Council, will provide the new facility on the site of the existing Glastonbury Court care home, which will be demolished.

The plans for the development were approved by St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s development control committee yesterday.

Suffolk County Council has said the new facilities will be an improvement, but residents have had concerns including the number of parking spaces and the scale of the development.

County and borough councillor Sarah Stamp said she was “really pleased” with the decision. “I think it’s a really important service for the community and particularly with the ageing demographic we have got.

“But I do share residents concerns about parking. It’s already difficult in the area. That said, Care UK have taken that into account and have upped the number of spaces from 29 to 34. But I just hope in the longer term Care UK will stand by their commitment to mitigate the risk.”

Philip Jude, vice chair of the Horringer Court Residents’ Association, said: “I think the thing could work, but it ought to go on a different site and they have just dismissed that.”

All 10 of Care UK’s planning applications for care home and wellbeing centre developments have now been approved. Care UK is investing £60million to provide better care for older people in Suffolk.

Chris Hopkinson, Care UK regional operations director, said: “This is an exciting time for us and we are delighted that the approval of Glastonbury Court completes our project aim.”

Glastonbury Court is expected to welcome residents from late 2015.
