Rosie Grant, of Bury St Edmunds, was one of just five winners in ITV Anglia’s School Report competition, where students from across the east of England were invited to submit stories marking 100 years since the fighting started.

The 15-year-old County Upper School student found the remarkable tale of John Cunningham during her volunteer work at The Martins Care Home in Bury, where his daughter-in-law, Dorothy Cunningham, is a resident.

As well as flying planes over Germany during the war, Mr Cunningham wrote the chords to Pack Up Your Troubles – one of the most iconic songs to emerge from the conflict.

Having interviewed Mrs Cunningham at length and carried out other research, Rosie’s written report was selected out of hundreds of entries, and a crew from ITV Anglia will visit the care home next month for a day of filming –including residents singing a special rendition of Pack Up Your Troubles.

Rosie will also be filmed interviewing Mrs Cunningham, but the talented teenager is not fazed.

She said: “It will be quite an experience as I’ve never done it before. It’s very exciting. I’ve never really thought about doing media, but I have definitely got into it.”

Rosie volunteers at Martins Care Home for the Duke of Edinburgh programme, and the film will be broadcast later in the summer

Headteacher Vicky Neale said: “We’re proud of Rosie.”
