The family who have been moving around the Bury area for some time are now back at the site in Orttewell Road which had been an agreed temporary site for them over the winter.

It is believed the core group of the family returned at the weekend with several caravans.

A borough council spokeswoman said: “We are working with a group of travellers local to the Bury area.

“Our purpose is to avoid unauthorised encampments by helping identify land they can use as a permanent private site. A temporary toleration agreement allowing the group to stay at the Orttewell Road site over the winter was well observed and the group moved on as agreed.

“Unfortunately they have since returned and we are now using all the legal avenues available to us through the Suffolk Protocol for Managing Unauthorised Encampments. The process starts with a welfare visit to assess circumstances and to inform a meeting of the authorities as soon as possible.”

The site in Orttewell Road is owned by Suffolk County Council.
