A high power line came down on farmer’s land in Suffolk this morning setting fire to a field of barley and leaving hundreds of customers without power.

Residents in Buxhall, near Stowmarket, have also reported fluctuating supplies throughout the morning as UK Power Networks said it worked “as quickly and safely as possible” to restore power.

David Green, who has lived in the village for 50 years, said he was woken early by the sound of buzzing.

“The power was going berserk and it’s wrecked quite a bit of my kit,” he added.

UK Power Networks said the 602 customers lost power when the line came down around 7.30am.

Engineers re-routed supplies so that 307 customers had their power back just after 8.10am, with the remaining 295 reconnected by 10am. However, the company had to isolate supplies to a further 201 customer around the same time, while engineers worked on the fault.

“This work is continuing and we apologise to customers who are currently without power,” a spokesman said.

“We have received a number of calls regarding fluctuating power or no power in Buxhall.”

Suffolk Fire and Rescue was called to the scene at 7.30am and spent three hours tackling fires in nearby grass and barley fields. Crews from Stow market and Elmswell attended and had dealt with the fire by 10.45am.
