The owner of cat which had to have its tail amputated after it was shot at has spoken of her shock that someone would target her pet.

Tanya Caley, who works as a veterinary nurse, returned from work to her home in Charles Tye, near Needham Market on Tuesday, to find her 10-year-old Bengal cat, Oreo, bleeding.

Her first thought was that he had been hit by a car but after being rushed to Stowe Veterinary Group, where she works, an x-ray showed the cat had a pellet in its tail.

“He came up to the window, which I lowered so he could come in but he was unwilling to jump and his tail was flapping in between his legs,” she said.

“I thought he had been hit by a car. He had an x-ray and it showed a bullet or pellet and that he had fractured it. He had no feeling in the tail, so he had to have it amputated.”

Miss Caley, 36, who lives at home with her fiancé, vet Peter Mason, now fears her other cat Myrtle, an Egyptian Mau, could also be shot at.

She added: “I do not want it to happen to anyone else. Oreo is my baby, I am frightened to let him outside. He did have a beautiful tail; cats use them for balance.

“It’s an unnecessary thing to put a 10-year-old cat through. I did get cross that somebody could do it; it changed my feeling about everything.”

Police said Oreo was shot with an air weapon between 7am and 7pm in the Charles Tye area, near Ringshall.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555111.

  • I would never hurt a cat or any animal in any way but cats are a darn menace they use my front garden which is only small, so right up to my kitchen window for a toilet and the flies in summer are just awful, so much so I can't open my window. And this is every day smelly things.

  • Well it's no good if you only injure the mangy moggie. That means it can come back and use your garden as a toilet again.

  • These people who do this tipe of thing are cowards the punishment should be returned when and if they are ever caught then they would realise what pain this poor animal was in.
