A road in Chelmsford was closed last night as police dealt with the aftermath of a fatal crash.

A Chevrolet Corvette and a Vauxhall Astra were involved in a head-on crash on Essex Regiment Way, between Wheelers Hill and the Braintree road at around 3pm yesterday.

The Corvette caught alight and the driver, believed to be a man in his 60s from Chelmsford, was trapped inside. He died at the scene.

A family from Dunmow, a man and a woman in their 30s and two girls aged three and 18 months, were travelling in the Astra and all sustained serious injuries.

The family were taken by ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

The road was closed in both directions.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Pc Dave Gorbutt at the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101 or email
