A woman in her late 70s has died in a head-on collision between two vehicles.

The accident happened on the A414 near Writtle in Essex around 4.10pm.

The vehicles involved were an orange Kia Picanto and a blue Ford Focus.

Paramedics pronounced the driver of the Kia, a woman in her late 70s from the Chelmsford area, dead at the scene.

A woman from the Focus has been taken to Royal London Hospital for treatment to injuries which are not believed to be serious.

The road is likely to remain closed until 9pm.

Anyone who witnessed the collision and who has not yet spoken to police is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101 or email them on: collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk.
