AN earthquake has struck in northern Chile tonight.

The 6.7 magnitude quake happened just before 8.30pm at a depth of 43km between Vallenar and Copiapo.

The amount of damage is not yet known but it was reported that buildings in Santiago were swaying.

No tsunami warning has been issued.
