Tendring District Council has been asked to take 13 people who live in properties affected by the explosion which occurred in Cloes Lane at around 8.30am.

Council staff are currently preparing the reception centre ready for the arrival of the residents who were earlier taken to St Clare’s Roman Catholic Primary School and the Brace of Pistols pub.

The evacuees will be brought to Clacton Town Hall by minibus with the transport being arranged by Essex County Council.

The council’s communications manager, Nigel Brown, said: “We are getting the Essex Hall ready to take those we have been asked to accommodate at the request of Essex Police.

“They will be made comfortable and looked after by volunteer staff at the Council for as long as is necessary.”

The council will also be providing advice and guidance – and assistance where appropriate – to people who are made homeless due to the incident.
