Police have monitored a rally by the English Defence League in an Essex coastal town.

A spokesman for Essex Police said the force was not aware of the demonstration until an off-duty police and community support officer spotted some of those involved at Clacton’s rail station.

The 20-strong group occupied an area of Pier Avenue from around 1.50pm until the last demonstrator left at 5pm.

“This has been finished and dealt with,” the spokesman said.

“The 20 demonstrators raised a few flags. There were no scuffles and no arrests.”

A post put up on the EDL’s Clacton-on-Sea Facebook website said: “To everyone who helped us today and the public of this great British town. We are here for the public and we will never surrender!”

  • The EDL is certainly not my cup of tea but we live in a democracy, so everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Heavy rain and flooding has caused delays on the road and rail networks across Suffolk this morning, after more than a months worth of rain fell in four hours.

The Suffolk Show of 2014 is remembered for the visit of Prince Harry, not the rain on the day before the show.

Paul Geater has been a regular visitor to the Suffolk Show over many decades – and will be back there again as part of our coverage on both days of the event. He has no worries about the weather this year, despite Tuesday’s rain.

The rain may have stopped but the skies over Suffolk are grey and threatening, and your plans for the day have now fallen flat.
