Rail passengers face crowded platforms as engineering works on the Greater Anglia mainline cause cancellations and severe delays in Suffolk and Essex.

The work being carried out overnight between Stratford and Gidea Park stations in East London has overrun and Greater Anglia have cancelled services running as far as Norwich over the rush-hour commute.

The train provider has tweeted this morning to tell customers that there will be delays expected on their services until 8am.

They said: “Due to over-running engineering works between Stratford and Gidea Park some lines are blocked.

“Train services will be subject to delays, cancellations and alterations.

“Services in and out of Liverpool Street will be severely disrupted.”

The company expect delays to affect Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester, Chelmsford, Braintree, Shenfield, Southend Victoria, Southminster and London Liverpool Street.

Greater Anglia have also begun to offer customers information on how to apply for a refund through their Delay Repay scheme, which is available to commuters delayed by at least 30 minutes.

A spokesman for the Greater Anglia Rail Users group said: “There seems to be a concerning increase in delays, cancellations and short formed trains, which is resulting in over crowding on the trains that are running.

“We are seeing an increase in the amount of people using alternative transport in an attempt to avoid using GA. We hope that GA have a handle on this and will consider putting fare increases on hold until they can get the basics right.”
