Colchester: Appeal after burglar strikes while homeowner sleeps

PUBLISHED: 09:40 14 December 2012

DETECTIVES are appealing for information following a burglary in Colchester in which thieves ransacked the property while the owner was asleep inside.

The break-in happened at a house on Craven Drive between 9pm on Wednesday and 1am yesterday.

The suspect entered through an unlocked rear door and stole a sum of money and a number of Sovereign coins.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Claire Jennings said: “This burglar clearly didn’t have any concerns about invading a home whereby someone was asleep inside. We would again remind homeowners to lock their windows and doors before retiring for the night in a bid to deter and stop these overnight crimes. “As well as witnesses to the break-in, we’re also keen to hear from anyone who is offered these coins in less than usual circumstances or local shops which also may be offered them for sale.”

The Full Sovereigns are dated 1826, 1887, 1891, 1909, 1910 (x2), 1912, 1914, 1915 and 2000 (x2) while the Half Sovereigns are dated 1896, 1904 and 1908.

A forensic examination of the scene was carried out as were house-to-house enquiries.

Anyone with information in connection with this burglary is urged to contact detectives at Colchester police station on 101.
