Police would like to speak to a man who came to the aid of a woman on a disability scooter after someone stole her bag in Colchester.

A man, described as white and in his 30s, approached the woman in Hawthorn Avenue, Greenstead, at about 4.30pm on April 27 and took her handbag from the front basket of the scooter.

He said ‘thank you’ and then walked away.

An unidentified witness then ran after the man, took the handbag away from him, and returned it to the victim – nothing was missing.

The suspect is also described as having short brown hair, wearing grey jogging bottoms and a checked shirt. He was possibly wearing spectacles.

The witness who recovered the bag was white and in his 30s, but no other details have been given and police need to speak to him to get more information on the suspect.

There were also two children who saw the incident and they are believed to be about seven or eight years old.

Pc Lindsay Black, who is investigating, said: “This was a despicable thing to do and we want to identify the man responsible, so urge anyone with any information and the man who recovered the woman’s bag to contact me at Colchester Police Station on 101.”
