Eight weeks on from of the murder of James Attfield in Colchester, detectives are hoping that a man seen riding a bike through a park sometime before his body was discovered will come forward.

Mr Attfield was found seriously injured with more than 100 stab wounds to his body in Castle Park, off Guildford Road, just before 6am on Saturday, March 29. He died a short time later at the scene.

The 33-year-old, from East Bay in the town, was last seen in the River Lodge pub on Middleborough the previous night.

He left there shortly after 10pm and officers are continuing to piece together his last movements from witness accounts.

The man shown in the CCTV image has yet to come forward despite his picture being shown on television, online and in print.

Police also believe the timing on the image is about an hour fast and this would have been captured at 00:56.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Simon Werrett, said: “Although the image is slightly distorted because of the lack of light and shadows, we hope that this cyclist will recall being in the park near the lake by looking at their image and the time-stamp on it.

“We urge to them to contact us so that we can talk to them and find out what they were doing in the park and then hopefully dismiss them from the enquiry.

“We want to move on and concentrate fully on potential suspects.”

In total, seven people require possible elimination from the murder investigation. To help jog memories, police are releasing images of the last day’s movements of James Attfield as he walked through the town centre.

A Crimestoppers reward of up to £5,000 still remains on offer for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the murder.

Anyone with information is asked to call Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
