Colchester: Doorstep conmen steal jewellery from home in Rochdale Way

PUBLISHED: 17:22 18 May 2014 | UPDATED: 17:22 18 May 2014

Detectives in Colchester are urging people to be aware after bogus callers tricked their way into a house and stole jewellery.

Two men claiming to be from the council knocked on the door of a property in Rochdale Way, Greensted, at around 7pm on Saturday asking to check the water pipes.

A woman who lives in the property was alone and allowed them in. They took the jewellery from an upstairs room.

Police said the two men had Irish accents. One is described as being white, aged around 30 to 40, with short greying hair under a blue baseball cap. He had an unshaven greying beard. The other man was also white, was thin, aged in his 20s and had short dark hair.

Dc Alison Cotter from Colchester CID said: “I would urge all people to ask anyone knocking at the door for identification.

“Unfortunately bogus callers do operate.

“If you are suspicious, report it to the police.

“Most people who call at your home will have a genuine reason for doing so but by taking a few simple precautions you can protect yourself and your home.”

Police urged people not to be frightened to ask for identification; consider installing a door chain and use it; remember to lock the back door before opening the front; and don’t keep large amounts of cash in the house.

Anybody with any information about the incident or who may have seen anybody acting suspiciously in the Greensted area is asked to contact Colchester CID on Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
