Firefighters in Essex were called to a blaze in an accommodation block at Colchester Garrison in the early hours of this morning.

Crews from Colchester and Mersea were sent to the scene, in Roman Road, at about 2.30am today.

The third floor of the block, at Merville Barracks, was heavily smoke-logged as a result of the blaze, which was extinguished just before 5.40am.

The second floor was also ventilated free of smoke.

The aerial ladder platform and a thermal image camera were then used by firefighters to check if the fire had spread into the loft area.

An investigation is now due to start into the cause of the blaze.
