Police investigating the murder of Colchester man James Attfield have today re-issued a CCTV image of a man they would like to talk to in relation to the incident.

The appeal has come ten weeks after Mr Attfield was found in Castle Park, off Guildford Road in the town, with 102 stab wounds to his body – officers say they want to eliminate the pictured man from their inquiries.

The 33-year-old was last seen in the River Lodge pub in Middleborough on Friday, March 28. He left there just after 10pm and was not seen again until he was discovered in the park at 6am the following day.

Efforts by paramedics to revive him failed and a murder inquiry was launched.

The man shown in the night-time image has not yet come forward despite the picture being shown on multiple media platforms.

Senior investigating officer, DCI Simon Werrett, said: “We want this individual or those who know and love him to contact us so that we can speak to him, ascertain what he was doing in the park and then hopefully dismiss him from the enquiry.

“We want to move on and concentrate fully on potential suspects.”

In total, seven people are still being asked to come forward so they can be eliminated from the investigation. To jog people’s memories, an image has also been released of James Attfield as he walked through the town centre the day before his death.

Mr Attfield, of East Bay, Colchester, suffered a brain injury in a car crash about four years ago. He was supported by the charity Headway Essex for the last three years.

Officials there described him as a “lovely, quiet, polite and gentle person”.

A Crimestoppers reward of £5,000 is also still on offer for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the murder.

Two people, a man and a woman both aged 27, and from Colchester, are currently on police bail until May 21.

Anyone with information is asked to call Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
