James Attfield was found seriously injured with over 100 stab wounds in Castle Park off Guildford Road shortly before 6am on Saturday, March 29. He died a short time later at the scene.

The 33-year-old man from East Bay in the town was last seen in the River Lodge public house on Middleborough on Friday, March 28. He left there shortly after 10pm and police are continuing to piece together his last movements from witness accounts. The man shown in Image 4 on the Essex Police website (www.essex.police.uk) has yet to come forward despite his picture already being shown on television, online and in print.

Although there are time stamps on the night-time CCTV images, the clock is an hour fast so the man in Image 4 would have been walking through Lower Castle Park at 10:56pm (not 11:56pm) on Friday, March 28.

In total, seven people require possible elimination from the murder investigation. To help jog memories, police are releasing images of the last day’s movements of James Attfield as he walked through the town centre with the latest one showing him in the town’s post office.

A Crimestoppers reward of up to £5,000 still remains on offer for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the murder.

The man shown in the night-time CCTV image or anyone with information is asked to call Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

A man and a woman, both 27, from Colchester, are on police bail until July 9 after having been arrested in connection with the murder.
