Colchester: Running camel hopes to set new world record

PUBLISHED: 18:25 04 April 2014 | UPDATED: 18:31 04 April 2014

A pantomime camel is set to run around a Colchester park as two runners hope to set a new world record.

Lorraine Collins, 42, and Rob Saunders, 36, are today running 5km around Castle Park in the costume as part of the Colchester Parkrun’s one-year birthday celebrations.

If they complete the course in under 30 minutes they will set a new Guinness World Record for the feat. A professional witness will monitor the event, hoping to see them make it into the record books.

Both keen runners, Rob, from Earls Colne, and Lorraine, from Great Tey, did an ultra-marathon last year.

Lorraine, who will be the rear of the camel, said: “We are confident we can beat it; we both run regularly and usually do it much quicker.

“But we were 31 minutes last time in the costume so we need to get a move on.

“I’ve always been the rear but the head is quite heavy and I am just following.

“It is very hot and our hooves might get tangled up and the eye holes tend to bounce around, so it is quite tricky.”

A former head teacher from Saffron Walden who was found with “horrific” child abuse images has avoided jail.

A man from Bedfordshire has been arrested in connection with a ram-raid in Long Melford.

More than four thousand people have signed a petition launched by a concerned Mum, urging the county council to scrap a controversial consultation into cutting free school transport.

A teenager gunned a man down outside a petrol station over a comment that he “looked like the Milky Bar Kid”, and he is still on the run from police, a trial heard.

A world-renowned Suffolk harpist accused of taking the virginity of a schoolboy more than three decades ago told police the teenager had sexually assaulted her, a court has heard.

A man and a teenager from Stowmarket have been charged with robbery along with a series of other offences.

Ipswich Town Hall is preparing for its 150th birthday with a major celebration at the end of the month.
